While Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Popular Picture Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many local residents, heard pops echoing through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her home, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces on display made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the street, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the hill soaked, she heard someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He moved into something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery During Crisis

The photo taken by Ching of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of valour in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating many victims.

Community Reaction and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the scene of the violence transforming into a temporary medical station. The squad of rescuers later shared a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your kind words and support. We are deeply moved by the kindness directed at our team,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many permanent beach safety officers, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the shooting commenced right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is incredible,” commented a council representative.

“These individuals exhibit selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores protected for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such darkness.”
