A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
