The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital. Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video. Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken. We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
