The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
