Educator Slain and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School

Security breach at school
Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.

Local residents informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in the past few months, with educational institutions suffering the most of the conflict.
