A former Royal Marines Commando acted as a “man in a rage” when he drove into scores of Liverpool football club supporters during a victory parade, in what many feared was a terrorist attack, according to court proceedings. “The footage is truly shocking.” Those injured of Paul Doyle cried while dashcam footage showed bodies spinning through the air as he accelerated into crowds and shouted: “Get out of the way!” Doyle, 54, is due to be sentenced on Tuesday following his guilty plea on the first day of his trial last month to 31 offences involving 29 victims, including eight minors. ‘Consumed by Anger’ Prosecutors warned those in court that the video evidence from the defendant’s large people carrier was “truly shocking”. It showed the parent yelling “fucking pricks” as well as “fucking move” while he headed straight for a large crowd of supporters, with people frantically dragging children to safety as he blasted the horn. It was stated in court that Doyle acted as a “individual whose anger whose anger had completely taken hold of him” as he ploughed further into the crowd, speeding up as people collided with his car. Extent of the Injuries In total, the ex-marine hurt 134 people in just seven minutes – including more than 50 requiring hospital care. An infant was “miraculously” unharmed even though he was left on the roadway when Doyle’s car hit his pram, the court heard. A supporter, a man named in court, was seen being launched into the air by the vehicle, suffering a cut to the back of his head, broken ribs and numerous scrapes. The defendant was heard screaming “fuck’s sake move! Get out of my path!” before ploughing further into screaming supporters, among them an older woman and young children who were dragged under the car. Celebration Descends into Chaos Addressing a packed courtroom, the prosecution said approximately a million individuals had attended “what they thought would be a day of joyfulness” to celebrate Liverpool winning their 20th league title. Scenes of jubilation swiftly became “terror”, the prosecutor said, as Doyle drove into oncoming fans while trying to collect a companion from the parade route. “Witnesses thought that what was taking place was a terrorist attack.” Brave Intervention Stops Driver With injured people on the street, the vehicle’s path was brought to a halt by an ex-army member, a man identified in court, who entered the back of the car and held the car’s gear selector in “park”. Despite this, Doyle continued pressing the gas pedal, the court heard. In his police interview, Doyle stated he acted in a “state of sheer panic” because he feared for his life. Yet, the prosecution argued that the video showed Doyle “just lost his temper in his desire to get to where he wanted to get to”. It was further stated: “Consumed by anger, he drove into the crowd and as he did so his intent was to cause serious injury.” Dangerous Driving Prior to Incident Footage indicated the driver was driving recklessly before he reached the city centre, undertaking cars at speed and jumping red lights. He ignored traffic diversion measures and weaved around other vehicles, including an ambulance and police cars, as he entered the crowds. Doyle is understood to be facing a prison sentence of more than 10 years when he is sentenced on Tuesday.
